I'm currently in the process of making a dynamic gui in JOGL, got a few tabs and forms here and there now. But I've run out of ideas, or atleast am thinking up more features to add.

Anyway, what do you think are the good and bad aspects of GUI's what do you really like, or really hate about certain GUIs in games?

All comments welcome.

Thanks! :D

I hate the GUI in EVE Online. It's too fiddly, square, doesn't stay where you want it to. Ugh.

In contrast, I love the GUI in WoW, especially the fact that you can use LUA to customize it and add tools.

I'm also a fan of bright, bold, obvious user interfaces. Just because somebody is making a medieval game, doesn't mean they have to make everything grey or wood textured. Simple is good, don't over complicate things and move all of the stuff the user won't have to access frequently and quickly into a sub-menu.

I'm pretty much on par with you Kyori, especially on simplism and overdone gui graphics. I didn't know you could use LUA to customize it, that's a pretty nifty feature, I might have a look into it. Hopefully when i finish it i could make a clone for netGore if they don't have one at the time. Depends how similar the two architectures (XNA and OpenGL) are.

ah, I loved the customisability of the WoW GUI (Using mods), that was awesome.

For me, the more I can customise it to how I like it, the better it is.

Allowing your users to customize as much as possible is always a plus. It makes for a more personal experience. You don't end up with users that start playing your game and hate something about it like "AHHH I wish the trade was attached to my bag window so I don't have to drag it all the way to the other side of the screen." well in this case the user could do that that was just an example a poor one but you get my point.

a GUI should adjust to the player, not the other way around ^^
and if it doesnt, it should be easy to use and very overlookable.

also keep in mind some people want to see their stats while equipping items.,
or their skill window. for example.
