Hey guys, I hooked up my old monitor to my ownboard for the hell of it.
I had to format anyway and was curious...
Installed ATI drivers, nVidia Drivers (ATI X1650 and Geforce 6100 onboard)

It works like a charm xD
I call it "Desktop SLI for poor people" XD
(I know theres a huge difference, regard it as a joke)

anyhow with this new and beautiful desktop...woot! :D

as a coder I never want to go back to single monitor again!

Cool, but never found the appeal. I set it up once, and now my left screen is just always disconnected. I'd rather just sell my old screen and buy a bigger one, maybe my next one will either be a 24in or 30in.

30"?! Thats kinda crazy for a monitor. But then again, my brother has his 40" sony tv set up for his computer screen and it's pretty sweet. But he doesnt use it for anything like we do, so hes ok. Developing with that is a no no ;)

QFT.

I run VS2008 in one monitor and IRC/FireFox/MSDN in the other. Sometimes I run VS2008 over both of the monitors and use the "new vertical panel" feature to split code windows over the screens. It's really handy and going back to a single 15" 4:3 aspect ratio screen after using 2x 22" 16:10 screens just feels claustrophobic. :D

Well commented out Kyori, otherwise i would have struck you down with all my might :P

I would rather just have 2 separate IDE's (one per screen) running on the same project though (never tried but would be sweet if you could). Then again i would much rather split code on one big screen than having to adjust it for 2. Then again i hardly ever bother with splitting code, its not my style, real men don't multitask.

I love my dual-monitor layout for programming. I always felt like I wasted too much time moving in and out of windows when I had a single monitor, especially in Visual Studio 2003+. My main monitor is a huge pane of the code and a little pane for navigating the current code file. The secondary monitor has my solution explorer, toolbox, object searching, search results, notes/output/etc, and all that jazz. I rarely ever have to open or close new windows, except for when viewing different source files or looking at my unit test results/explorer. THAT is a huge time saver.

It may be a huge time saver for someone like yourself. But different people behave differently, im actually slower (in every way possible) when i have split windows.

Maybe its because im "proactive" when i create code. I tend to add code in advance before swapping code files, the side-effect of that is i don't need to go back to it. Whenever i add anything, its usually all in my head before i start coding it. I basically do all my coding in "hits" and then think up another few pages of code which makes me look like im doing nothing for 2 hours, then i suddenly jump up and type a whole lot of crap again. I know exactly where all my code is so i just go add this bit here, next file add that bit, next file add this and im done. On average i would spend 2 mins of coding for every half hour of lying on my bed thinking. But during that 2 mins of coding i would pump out a page of relevant useful code. If anything of the slightest bit distracts me during that time i tend to make a mistake, or just forget everything altogether. Doesn't happen too often unless the IDE has too much stuff on it, or my brother barges through the door, or my parents call me to dinner.

The only time im really ever going spastic going through my project folder is when i suddenly get a brain fade and can't remember what i was doing, but even then i spend a lot of time just reading through the same code over and over like im having an epileptic fit. Looking at how many projects I've done and how far ive gone in comparison to other projects in the same space of time, i can say my development time is still probably faster than most. (im being objective here okay :P).

So you can see how then, having split screens and navigation windows and such would only complicate things for me. When i do things in such a linear one-thing-at-a-time fashion.

In the end you could pretty much attribute it to different brains.

Let's say you have two windows. Visual Studio 2008 Pro (FUCK YEAH DREAMSPARK) and some random website full of code to copy/steal/use with permission/etc.

Single-monitor:
*memorize line of code*
*switch to IDE*
*type code*
*switch back*
REPEAT
????
PROFIT!

Dual-monitor:
Place IDE on one screen.
Place website on the other.
Now you can type shit without needing a keyboard with hotkeys to switch apps for you!

FEELS GOOD MAN

EDIT:

Oh God, 4chan.
