Well, Politics not exactly something most teenagers enjoy hell I dont, But what about a game world run by the players, Elected officals, rights, laws all done through in game and forums. Im thinking about working on a game not sure what base where everyone has a job etc. Based on VBgore. I like what the engine achives. But then theres the simple fact theres a reason why only 18+ can vote in the USA. But Im just looking for some input. Thanks

Brandon

I think it would be fun. Whole reason I left the game secondlife after being there for a good while (very good while :) ) is becouse there is no good system of rules. It is pretty much "O I hope they will help me this time when I report the person". But yeah in that game there was also alot of room to be naughty as there is an ingme scripting language (only one I was ever decent at haha) and the ability to upload textures, sound, animation, etc.

Moral of the story, make sure to keep up with your players and do not give them to much power to do stupid stuff.

Than also, make sure the jobs you speak of are fun and numerous. If it is just like real life, I wouldent play it as my real life is why I play these games haha.

Good luck. :D

I think that a political system would be lots of fun, yet, very hard to maintain. For example, what if the player who was the...president, or leader, stopped playing or couldn't get on for a extended amount of time. And something politcal,oh lets say...a act of war was started, and he needed to sign to fight along side with other contries.Who knows. The point, theres no way of telling when a player will login. Plus what if he need to something very important, and he got lagged out, and something major happen, majorly bad that is. Computer and people are too unstable with each other, its impossible to know.Maybe a half npc half human thing. I dunno

A political system really wouldn't mean much, other then as a story line, unless you some how allow players to change the outcome of events and such by performing certaing deeds.

If you can get the politician system idea into your storyline, and got the skill to code it into the game, I think it would be mad.
And shadowsnake the way to solve that is to have elections or w/e like once a week, and you can only be nominated if your above XX level and been online sometime in the past XX hours.
I'd loovveee it if theres a politicial system....

With both good and poor experiances from diffrent game managers on mmos I can tell you that at least some sort of system naturaly evolves anyway. If you setup rules and levels of power with checks and balances (sound familar?) you can avoid many issues reguarding griefing and other extream player activities.

So true.

Personally I like politics! I used to play an awesome Star Wars (cough) text game where different planets were 'controlled' by different factions - they could post guards there, charge tolls, affect tax of shops and housing. Each planet generated income for it's faction, which was then spent on boosting planet defenses/offences, attracting new players to your cause, upgrades etc.

We tried to have a similar system in our game with clans, where if the leader was inactive for a period (say 2 weeks) then he'd be demoted and the second in command step up to his place, even if he was sick or went on holiday. This forces the leader to pick a good, active second just in case! And so on..

Possibilities are endless. I'm all for giving power to the players - just be careful of stretching yourself too thin over too many concepts. :)

Heh Indeed, the politicial system will defiantly be something to massively test in beta tests.
I mean in other 2d mmorpgs Power Abusing is already a common issue, without any form of politicial system.... (once again I refer to www.tibia.com, and prob runescape, but Ive never actually played it)
Add a politicial system into the game and youve given the PA's the chance to gain even more control over other players.... but yet at the same time It will be interesting in how it will work out, how corrupted people will remain president because they pay people and kill off their enemies...
But you still got to have some form of authority over elected players.... They still need to obey the game rules, and something should be put in, to prevent a player or guild to gain total control over the server without being challenged.

Just be careful not to make it too complicated I know alot of people just look for a game to kick arse and take names, if its too role play intensive might miss out on some of the player base. Make sure they have an option is all.

I think a sort of Player VS Enviroment political system could be interesting. For example towns and such could be operated by players with mayors and even tyrants, but not only do they need to protect their city from other players trying to invade or gain political power, but also NPC's attacking the city, etc.

But like others have said, it's a tricky concept to get right. If the players have too much power it can ruin the game (lets be honest, no one wants to trust a capitcal city in the hands of a 12 year old) but you still want the players to "feel" as if they are in control.

Where you, the GM, are like god. Hehehe
