What is truly prefered among people? The normal TOP view RPG(2D), or adding an illusion of depth (A.K.A 2.5D)

Not a big intro, busy doing papers atm. However I believe its something which should be discussed.

How is it possible for a 2D based game to over come a 2.5D, vice versa?
What advantages do each prove to have?
What possibilities does the theory side (programming) seem to have with the different styles?

Obviously the features in a game would differ, but by how much?

I'm not sure if this topic will bloom, I think it'll crash immediately. But its something which should be considered.

Now back to my papers wasting too much time >.>

Mind showing an example of each style that gives a good comparison between the two? I don't play enough games to know. :P

No, it can be done from both types of play.

"2.5D, short for two-and-a-half dimensional, although technically incorrect (the concept is unrelated to modern mathematical ideas of non-integer dimension), is a term that has become popular to describe a number of different phenomena, most of which are related to computing and especially video games."

"One use of the term is to describe a style of graphics in video games with 2D gameplay, but with a limited 3D appearance, popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. A collection of 2D sprites moves independently of each other, and/or the background, using the theory of parallaxing to create a sense of depth. A number of games also uses the closely related concept of parallax scrolling, which creates a sense of depth between the actual interactive game elements, and the background. Because of this method, the effect only works when the game character is in motion. One good example game using this style is NiGHTS Into Dreams."

Hmm, I can't really imagine how this would be done in a non-sidescroller style.

If it is what it is like in that picture Nex posted, all you have to do is angle your graphics differently - it is a completely artistic-based change, and shouldn't affect the engine one way or the other.

It's Not Totally 3D, It's 2.5D Lol. The Buildings Have This Pseudo 3D Look To Em And Like Everything Else Is Just Regular.

Oh. So the buildings are 3d and nothing else is?
I see what you mean.
Because the buildings are actually models, you can see because from your players perspective you can see the other building not infront of you on an angle =]

And this is why, kids, we do not mention the 'in between' 2D and 3D! xDDD Totally confusing!

Actually, I think they create this kind of graphics by snap-shooting the 3d images.

yeah... as I was saying, starcraft is in 2(uh...) .5d. ( I guess)
although it fooled me the last time, but after playing warcraft I knew the difference then.
