"Those Who Are About To Die Salute You" Morituri te salutant

The Brave are allways the first to die. Well maybe not in MMORPG. Leeroy Jenkins will live forever. Nothing has had a stronger effect on history then Death. Does it effect games ? Not so much. Do the players truely fear Death ? Ummm.. No. It's just a minor set back like breaking a nail.

Back in the days of Pen&Paper I learned that the key to drawly player in was Emotion. Invoking each of the emotions seperatly is difficult for any type game maker. Bravery if an emotion is well... complex. To only way to prove your bravery is to risk loss. The only way to be a Hero is to face Death.

Woman: "Wow Romeo Johnson was a true hero. He lost his life to save her" :( *crys*
Town Guard: " Hero my ass. It cost me 20 bucks to resurrect him, & the cheap bastard still hasn't paid me back."

Spoiled players charge into battle expecting to win after playing years of one player RPG's that were made so anybody can beat them. Their filled with a false confidence they haven't earned, & an expectation to automatically win. Because they try really really hard & mommy'wommy said that's all it takes to be the best. How can you stand out in a game where you and everyone online are each seperatly the hero of legend. The Chosen One !!! Picked by the GODS !!!! If they play a game that there not the best at, they complain that the game is flawed.

The Question:How should games handle death ? The harder it is, the Braver the players are for facing it. But then less types of players will play it. The easyer it is, the less emotion the game can give. The less rewarding it can be for some. Not everyone plays for a challenge, but they still think they're good.

most people don't agree with me, put i am a big supporter of permadeath. if you dont want to die, you have to actually put thought into what you're doing.
not only is there almost no penelty for death in most games, but it also makes the game easier boyond the 'if i die i get to try again' attitude. think of a scenario where there's 4 or 5 tough enemies in your way, instea of taking the time to plan out how you are going to handle it you rush right in. why? because for one, the wrost thing that happens is you have to walk back to your body, and two, as long as you can kill one or two of them before you die it will be easier to get through when you do rez.
one big argument against permadeath is it will lead to to much griefing. for one thing measures can be put in place to control unwanted pvp, and aside from that some high level well geared player is going to think twice before trying to randomly gank someone if there is a risk things may go wrong and end with him losing his character instead.

on the subject of everyone expecting to win, thats another thing i strongly disagree with in the top games out now. why should everyone be equal? whats the real point of working hard to get some ultimate weapon when everyone else has the same damn thing?
tie the two things together and you can get some interesting results.

This is exactly why games like WoW are so popular. Not just for their death system. World of Warcraft is the online game where every player can be the best--where every class is overpowered (in some way or another), and where everyone has the same opportunity to achieve the highest honors in the game world--no matter how much skill, effort, or time is put into the character.

This is why WoW has attracted an audience much wider than the pre-existing spectrum of MMORPG players. Many WoW players are people that played console games where they can die as many times as they want without risk. Many of them are new to the gaming world--and aren't very good at playing games; many more of them are children who enjoy playing online games, but lack the skill or maturity to compete in a traditional MMORPG.

When designing a game you have to ask yourself what is worth more--a handful of skilled players, intense gameplay, and a mature clientelle..... or a hefty pay check each month. Of course, if you get the formula just right, you may be able to achieve the best of both worlds. ;)

WoW is pretty idiot-friendly. You don't even have to take the troubles allocating your own stats. Whoever says, "But theres talents!" is going to be slapped - you rarely have more than a few places you "CAN" locate it, often the choices are quite obvious on what you do not want, and you get one per level from level 10 on.

Difficult decisions... :P

Whaaaaaa ?
Spodi forget my idea about driving to the new york stock exchange. In fact forget vbGORE. We have to clone WoW.
I want Money Image!!!

Drakore you have a good arguement, & that's good for someone who said the opposite of what I said. I want to hear more. Do the guys on the WoW board talk about it this way ?

Relax, it's ok for someone to have a different point of view. When you can't have that, you start to become like DA & them over at ES. Besides to me, it seems like less people are in this section & it's basicly my only one.

Creatively I like different Idea's that don't go together. When I try to break rules & combine things sane people never would I might make something original.

Thats part of this section. We could surprise you.

quick breakdown of the typical WoW forum thread.

'lol @ the orc war in front of brd trying to gank me. l2hamstring nub!'
'yeah good job beating me with your OP class. my other toon is a 70 lock and even i know they need to be nerfed'
'maybe if you actually knew how to play your class you wouldnt be QQ about locks'
'after you change that joke of a talent build then maybe you can tell me about how toplay my class'
'nice sword. good job still using a weap from a raid we cleared 6 months ago'
'lol!you obviously dont know anything about raiding. once you get as many 70s as me then we can talk'

usually goes on like that for about 6 pages

I know baseicly the stats all u do is buy the armor that u want that has the stats u need more of. And the talents are rly stupid. Gee im a fury I wonder where im going to put my talentpoints at :P

I never rly liked wow because of:
(ps dont say but. and hey. etc just read  )

A: weirdass graphics. Kinda cartoony looking.. aculy i dont even know what you'd call the graphics  its like your eyes, on crack.

B: the boring nubs that think they are gods of the game. Like the rouge ffs. Is it RLY a good choice to backstab a warrior with fury spec that is waiting to kill allys? (warrior with fury spec was me  )

C: the p2p rly is annoying. its not rly a good game and p2p it doesent sound tempting to me  .

D: The constant pvp is also annoying sometimes. Like WAAAHWAAH the warrior killed me waaah waaah hey lvl 70 in my guild plz kill him for me waaah waah.

That was the true world of warcraft. Just because they made diablo doesent make them the best  they should learn that

Well, it kinda depends on the type of realm your on, since they have different rules about pvp.

first off read the post again (PS dont say "But" or "Hey" etc) Which means Dont post Waah wahh wow rocks you are retarded waah waah. etc and looky what you did :P

nr 1: U are reffering that the graphics on wow are on every other Fantisy game? :P -> "I think it might be called 'fantasy'? " <-

nr 2:What dident make sense? heres a more detaild one then.

I get 3 different buffs 1, I get a 25%+ attck speed by chance, I get a 10% dmg buff by chance, And i regain 3% of my life by chance. and last but not least im duel weilding and i also have a onehanded sword with crusader on it. Doesnt sound like a good idea?

Yes i know they need money and what not but i just said that I dident want to pay that and THATS Why i quit.

And Yes i know the differences on the servers. I Dident ask for feed back ffs. maybe next time i wont get it.

so next time please read All of it. And if it says (Im not looking for feedback or any replys and dont reple to the post)

Does it have to be Perma or not ? I was thinking of coming half way. But if you want perma in a MMORPG I guess there are ways. Now Hp has to be high & damage low so people don't die in 2 or 3 hits. When a character die's his/her money, items, honor can be transferred to their descendents. Maybe the next generation of character can start with a small bonus from the last generation, but still at level one (if you believe in levels).
