Laurantine Cronicle: Shadows of the sun is a MMORPG using the VBGORE engine. It is a game that pushes the boundaries of possible player freedom and interaction. LC:SotS is currently under development and planned for Beta Release in the 4th Quarter of 2008.

LC:SotS began as a idea during the development of the VBGORE engine. Sadly due to a lack of Knowledge within the team the development was stopped until developers with sufficient skills were recruited. This happened late October 2007, when Egonplex and Elvarian joined the team as Programmer and Designer respectively. At this time a new plan was laid out and a active recruitment session was begun. During this time, Temko had secured a server, and a Domain for the Game. Though the team was still undermanned for their planned objectives, development could begin. Later on Both Noka and Ice Cold Flame joined the team. Noka using his private funds to host the server and domain and setting up the connective infrastructure, Ice Cold Flame was the new Pixel artist.

The first Development Team meeting was January 3d, and marked the start of the development of Laurantine Cronicle:Shadows of the Sun.

"Hello Traveler, I am the Chronicle."

So begins the journey of many travelers in this world, the world of Laurantine. A World Filled with danger, opportunity, hope and above all, Adventure.

But the world was not always like this, filled with war and death... long ago, before even the time of the Cronicle, the Creator and god of the world, who had nurtured the world for millennia untold suddenly went away.

In his absence the world and the people in it turned on each themselfes, on their friends and families and on the world itself. Society that had been nurtured over millennia fell apart in a matter of years. ...but that was not the end of the damage. For what began as a war for dominance, ended in a struggle for survival.

With the Creators absence, that had save guarded the world from many dangers, the inhabitents of the world were suddenly confronted by the elements themselves. Fire Spewed out in torrents, flood waves covered mountains and the earth itself swallowed whole continents. But even this was not the extent of the damage, for the primal elements, the elements of life and death, the elements of virtue and chaos... even they went our of control, decimation, destroying... until there was nothing left but a shell of society that was trying to survive.

From this society a group of individuals finally mastered the 4 most dangerous elements. those of Life, Death, Virtue and Chaos. How they did this remainds a secret to this day. But they did... and as if this mastering was the key, the world calmed down.

"I was born in that year, in the aftermath of the elements rampage, as such, i was also affected. i was luckier then some, for the element of life was what burned into me, making me old and wise... but also unable to die." the year was later called the Fall of Angels, of 0ET (Elemental Taming), And it took society several hundred years to rebuild, and new nations were formed, new alliances made... but this time. without the guidance of the creator" Not much time after, the creator was considered nothing more then a myth and those that tamed the elements nothing more then a Fable."

"During this time, i was raised as head of history at Refain, the capital of the new world. It was then the year 357ET, also known as the Year of the Gem. I remember that Year like no other, for it was one of the deciding moment in the history of our world, and also the event that led to my ascension to the title of Cronicle. Even those that had tamed the elements and had decided to have nothing to do with the inhabitants world, but this event led even them from the shadows."


"During the summer, a single tremor was felt by the people in refain, but as those are relatively common, little was thought of it... until travelers and rumors started pouring in that a group of 'shrouded and robed people had stopped a gem from falling on the world and crushing it'. Eye witnesses spoke of a gaint rock falling from the sky and girls and boys under the guidance of 4 adults doing some kind of ritual to stop the rock. Litle did these people know that what they had witness had been return of those who tamed the elements." Quickly after teams were sent out to investigate What they found were the remains of 7 girls, 4 boys and a adult man in the shade of a crystal the size of a mountain."

"before the children could be buried they were picked up by those that had tamed the elements. Who quickly after that became known as the Ethereals. But this event, though strange indeed, was not the reason why that year is so remembered, reviled and revered." For the crystal mountain held a secret, and that secret was revealed only years later when children started to show deformities, changes both mental and physical and started to show powers that were unheard of before, and even as these children came on to the world, humanity started to die out to diseases previously unknown." Only the tireless work of the Ethereal of Life, Lady Amira Zanib and her children saved the few that did survive the years following." Little is recorded during this time, for the world quickly went into disarray with people blaming those new borns with powers, or this or that nation, group or society, to think some even blamed the historians! All said and known is that which i have recorded personally during that time."

"But as slowly humanity started to adapt, and some survived the plagues, and were also gifted with the same powers. The children started to grow up and they learned to control their powers."

"It was then now the year 370ET, known as the year of awakening, that the powers finally earned their name, for as mastery of the powers grew feats previously unknown became possible. The power was called "Magic" and soon the guild of mages was formed dedicated to the mastery of the powers. That same year a group of adapted children, now fully grown decided to track into the wilds and find the mountain. whose location had become lost during the madness that ensued with it's arrival. there were 43 women and 28 men in that group, and what they found was far more then a mountain of crystal. They found monsters of unimaginable power, evil and malice. Little was known for several eons of what happened to the remained of the group for only 3 women returned to refain." Soon after the world was confronted with these beasts as they grew in numbers. quickly resulting in a power struggle, for the unknown, mistrusted and still widely hated powers of magic soon became the only means of defending against these beasts."

As mastery grew many different forms of these powers formed up and each group had their own calling. From healing to hunting, each mastered their own art."

"The year 421ET, known as the year of movement, marked the last year of that calender, which was replaced by the calender, inspired by the great movement of the people. during this year many groups that could not find agreement with each other left the capital of Refain to make their own. some went north, other south and a few went west. of those who went north and south, i shall come back later,but those that went west, found something they were not expecting." They found a thriving community. known as the elfin. they were the ancestors of the group that had first made contact with the beasts. having grown up in the wild their powers and skills were all adapted to nature and survival, and as the direct threat of roaming beasts attacking settlements became much less, they turned of art, music and poetry. Later they would be known as the elves of the Elfin forest, and the small village of 50, you will now know as Elfinar, Capital of the elfin nation."

those that went north, embraced what most would call a derogatory name, they became the dwarfs. though in the beginning a good number of them were normal humans, those soon disappeared as generations passed. the dwarfs dug themselves in into mountain strongholds to defend against beats and there they learned metalworking, mining and the art of stone crafting."

only those that went south met a tragic end... they found a lush plains land and settled upon it, but soon learned that they needed resources, this marked the first racial war, and was also that which marked the only racial war."

this is the last turning point in recent history and one with many layers that would take me weeks to explain. so i shall spell out the facts" "the plains folk, also known as the Azug-atar later on, marked and started to gather wood from the border wood north of their plains, the elf at first did not respond, but as the plains people advanced deeper and took more wood to construct their cities, boats the elves responded in violent fashion. it is not clear why they decided to respond then and not before, but the result was quick and precise and marked the start of a war of a great scale. the first armed contact between the nations was recorded on the years 138AM (After Movement), or the year 559ET by the old calender, and lasted until the end of the plains people as a whole on the year of mourning, 167AM."

"The war was brutal but never went much beyond the borders of the elfin forest. The end of the war was more accident then intend. as the elf nation collectively grouped to cast a single spell of fire, to block their forest from the plains folk forever more. the spell went awry and moved south over the plains, burning everything in it's path."

"this event triggered the second appearance of the Ethereals and their offspring to stop the flames from spreading, sadly not before most of the plains had been burned beyond recovery and nearly all of the plains people had been burned alive."

this event had 2 major reactions. primarily it was the death of the ethereal of Life, the Lady Amira Zanib, who as a being of pure life, could not die and was thus soon after reborn, but not before her essence had certain effects that are still being found and discovered. the secondary effect was that the Ethereal of Virtue, Ezandra El'Zanib decided to become involved into the affairs of the world."

"her involvement was limited to making sure certain laws were upheld, treaties were not broken,and the rights of all sentients were being kept. as such there are currently 5 major races in the world. these are the slowly in numbers growing humans, the long lived elves, the short dwarfs, the Yuan-ti Snake people and the ever wandering cat folk."

With that the Chronicle stops his narration and turn to the window, a single window looking over a field of white. "it is now the year 542AM and the world once again rises in turmoil, beats long tamed or extinct rise again to plague the world, and the world needs new champions, new heroes, the world needs you.




[edit] Levels and experience

Because of the way the system is set up, there are class choices for the player every 10 levels. this occurs at the following levels.

  • Character Creation
  • Level 10
  • Level 20
  • Level 30
  • Level 40

Total level cap is 50.

at character creation, level 10 and level 20 you get to chose one of the 8 base classes. At your lv 30 selection you get to chose a specialization depending on your previous choices.

Example

Craftsman(creation), Wizard(level 10), Wizard(level 20) can become a Artificer or Arcane Enchanter at level 30.

At lv 40 a player no longer choses a class he or she will end up with. this is automaticly assigned. the exact working of how it is decided are not public knowleage, but it compares the following statistics and decides what Class you shall be assigned.

  • Previous Class Choises
  • Kind of NPC killings, and amounts thereof.
  • Factions the player has traded with and amounts thereof.
  • Quest choices the player has made.
  • Some others that may or may not be made public knowledge at a later date and time.

At the level of 50 a player is given a sequence of quests that will decide two things.

  • First of them is the title the player will receive.
  • Secondly it will decide the final choice of the players NPC alliance.

becouse of the Dynamic story and character development that are at the forefront of the game, most of the Levels and Experience points are gained by doing Quests, Crafting and trading. Random Killing does give experience, but it is not the primary path, nor only, path to reaching higher within the game.

exact amounts of Experience Points are currently still under debate, but quests will cover 100% of character development from levels 1 to 50.

The game is set up in a way that allows the Maximal freedom of development for the player. with the interactive and real-time updating Dynamic story, every player has a hand in deciding the way the story and world will evolve.

with 5 playable races and a dozens of possible class choices the player can develop their character in nearly limitless ways.
